Statistics on Champions’ League: Play-off Round, 2nd leg (February 25)

*Countries of the 16 teams in the Round of 16:

Real Madrid vs Benfica 2-1 (agg 3-1)

*Real Madrid have reached the last 16 for the 29th successive season in UCL.
They are still the only team never eliminated before the round of 16 in the Champions League era: 30 appearances and 30 promotions to the round of 16.
Including the European Cup era (before 1992), Real Madrid have only failed to reach the round of 16 only once in its 56 campaigns: in 1962-63 (losing in the first round to Anderlecht).

*By winning both matches against Benfica in the tie, Real Madrid have leveled the all-time record in European Cup/Champions League against them: 3 wins and 3 losses in 6 matches.
There are now only 4 opponents against whom Real Madrid have more losses than wins in the competition: Milan, Arsenal, CSKA Moscow, Lille.

*Vinícius Júnior has scored in both legs of a two-legged Champions League knock-out tie for the very first time for Real Madrid.

*Vinícius Júnior has scored in his last 5 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions, equalling his best scoring run for the club (5 scoring games in a row also between August and September 2022).

*José Mourinho has not won any of his last 10 knock-out matches in the Champions League (4 draws, 6 defeats): the longest winless run in history for a coach in the knock-out stages of the competition.

Atalanta vs Borussia Dortmund (agg 4-3)

*Atalanta became the first team to qualify after losing their first leg by at least two goals in the knock-out stage of the Champions League since Liverpool against Barcelona in the 2018-19 semi-finals (0-3, 4-0).

*Atalanta are only the third Italian team to progress after losing the first leg by 2+ goals margin in the Champions League knock-out stage, after: Juventus vs Atlético Madrid in 2018-19 round of 16 (0-2, 3-0),
Roma vs Barcelona in 2017-18 quarter-finals (1-4, 3-0). 

*Borussia Dortmund became the second German club to be eliminated after winning their first leg by two goals in the knock-out stage of the Champions League, after Wolfsburg against Real Madrid in the 2015-16 quarter-finals (2-0, 0-3).
Two other German clubs were eliminated such way in the European Cup era:
Nürnberg against Benfica in 1961-62 quarter-finals (3-1, 0-6),
Bayern Munich against Saint-Étienne in 1969-70 first round (2-0, 0-3).

*Lazar Samardžić’s goal at 97 minutes and 54 seconds became the latest ever scored to win a Champions League knock-out tie, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo's goal (also by penalty) against Juventus on 11 April 2018, at 96 minutes and 55 seconds (Real Madrid eventually lost at home 1-3 after winning away game 3-0).

Paris St. Germain vs Monaco 2-2 (agg 5-4)

*PSG have qualified for the Champions League round of 16 for the 14th consecutive season: the longest run in history at this stage for a French club.

*Monaco have been eliminated in each of their last 5 knock-out ties in European competitions, since their victory against Borussia Dortmund in the 2016-17 Champions League quarter-finals (3-2, 3-1).

*Monaco have never progressed beyond the first round of the knock-out stage in each of their last 6 campaigns in the Champions League and Europa League (2 eliminations in the group stage, 3 in the play-offs, 1 in the round of 16).

*French clubs, apart from Paris Saint-Germain, have not won any of their last 11 knock-out matches in the Champions League (3 draws, 8 defeats), since Lyon's victory against Manchester City on 15 August 2020.

*Monaco are the second team to score against PSG while playing with ten men in a Champions League match. The first was CSKA Moscow in 2004.

*Marquinhos have played his 116th match for Paris Saint-Germain in European competitions, beating the record for a player with French clubs that belonged to Steve Mandanda – 115 (101 with Marseille, 14 with Rennes).

*Marquinhos has also scored and thus became the PSG’s joint second top scorer in the knock-out stages of the Champions League – 6 goals, only behind Kylian Mbappé (14), level with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé.
