Game of records in UCL
Qarabağ vs Newcastle 1-6
*Newcastle have scored 6 goals for the first ever time in a major European competition.
*Newcastle’s lead by 5+ goals (5-0) at half-time is a joint record of the Champions League knockout stage, registered only once before:
Bayern Munich in a quarter-finals vs Porto on 21 April 2015 (also 5-0 at half-time and 6-1 eventually).
*Newcastle lead 2-0 after just 7 minutes 51 seconds is the second-earliest for an away side in a Champions League match.
Only Borussia Dortmund have done so quicker, reaching 2-0 against Zenit on 25 February 2014 after 4 minutes 53 seconds (final score 4-2 for Borussia).
*Newcastle are the third English club to start a European Cup/Champions League knockout phase by scoring 6+ away goals.
Manchester United did it in 1957 (6-0 against Shamrock Rovers) and Arsenal in 2025 (7-1 against PSV).
*Anthony Gordon’s 4 goals in the first half of a game is a joint record for the Champions League history.
The only player to do so before was a Brazilian Luiz Adriano, for Shakhtar Donetsk against BATE Borisov in October 2014 (7-1), also in away game.
Gordon became the first ever in the competition’s history to make this feat in a knockout phase.
*Gordon is the first Newcastle player to score a poker in a major European competition, and the second English player in history to do it in a Champions League match, after Harry Kane's feat for Bayern Munich against Dinamo Zagreb on 17 September 2024.
*Gordon became just the second Englishman to reach double figures for goals (10) in a single Champions League campaign, after Harry Kane in 2024-25 (11).
English players who have scored 10+ goals in a single season in other European competitions are:
Stanley Bowles with Queens Park Rangers in UEFA Cup 1976-77 (11),
Alan Shearer with Newcastle in UEFA Cup 2004-05 (11).
*Gordon scored his 2nd and 3rd goals in space of just 1 minute 19 seconds. His brace is the 4th quickest in Champions League history. He conceded only 3 seconds to Gareth Bale’s record in this category: two goals in 1 minute 16 seconds in 2010 (see the table below).
*Newcastle’s Eddie Howe tied a record for most victories (5) by an English coach in a single Champions League campaign, set in 2002-03 by Bobby Robson (who achieved it with Newcastle as well), and repeated by Graham Potter (2022-23, with Chelsea).
*Newcastle became the first team to start 7 English players for a Champions League knockout game in almost 30 years; Manchester United were the last to do so, against Monaco in 1997-98.
*Newcastle's 4,070 km journey to Baku is the longest ever distance travelled by an English team for a Champions League away match.
*Elvin Jafarguliyev became the first Azerbaijani goalscorer in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
