Copa Libertadores statistics: Round of 16,  2nd leg (20-22 August)

*The current edition of Copa Libertadores becomes the first in which 8 teams that have already been champions of South America will compete in the quarterfinals.
This historic milestone surpasses the previous record, which was 7 champions at this stage of the competition.
This number was first reached in 2018, when the following teams reached this stage: River Plate, Boca Juniors, Grêmio, Palmeiras, Cruzeiro, Colo-Colo, and Independiente. The only team that wasn't a champion was Atlético Tucumán.
The number was repeated in 2019 (the exception was Cerro Porteño), 2020 (Libertad) and 2024 (Colo-Colo).

*This is the first time since 2018 that there are more Argentine teams (4: Estudiantes, Racing, River Plate, Vélez Sarsfield) than Brazilian (3: Flamengo, Palmeiras, São Paulo) in the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals.
In the 2018 edition, Boca Juniors, Independiente, River Plate and Atlético Tucumán qualified for Argentina, while Cruzeiro, Grêmio and Palmeiras did for Brazil.

Racing vs Peñarol 3-1 (agg 3-2)

*Franco Pardo's goal for Racing (at 93 minutes 46 seconds) is the latest goal scored by an Argentine team to advance from a Copa Libertadores knockout tie since Gonzalo Martínez's penalty goal for River Plate against Grêmio in the semifinal on 30 October 2018.

*Racing has overturned a two-legged tie against Peñarol for the 2nd time in the Copa Libertadores history. They had already achieved this feat in 1997, when they lost the first leg and won the second leg on penalties.

*Adrián Martínez became Racing’s top scorer in CONMEBOL tournaments (16 goals) surpassing Norberto Raffo (15).

São Paulo vs Atlético Nacional 1-1, pen. 4-3 (agg 1-1)

*A very unsuccessful knockout tie for Atlético Nacional’s Edwin Cardona: after missing 2 penalties in the first leg, he got a red card in the second.
It's his third red card in the Copa Libertadores, following two in 2014 (against Newell's Old Boys and Defensor Sporting).

Vélez Sársfield vs Fortaleza 2-0 (agg 2-0)

*Of the last 18 two-legged Copa Libertadores knockout ties between Argentine and Brazilian teams, only three Argentine clubs have advanced: Estudiantes against Fortaleza in 2022, Boca Juniors against Palmeiras in 2023, and now Vélez Sarsfield against Fortaleza.
