IFFHS CONTINENTAL NEWS - CONMEBOL QUALIFIERS WORLD CUP 2026

PictureDuring the November session, Tomás Rincón became the new record holder of Venezuela national team on number of appearances (130) surpassing Juan Arango (129).

Statistics on WC 2026 qualifiers in South America (match-day 6)

*Argentina became the first team in the history to win 2 competitive matches against Brazil in Maracaná: 1-0 in the final of  Copa América 2021 and now 1-0 in the qualifiers for World Cup 2026.
If we add here also the 1-0 victory in a friendly in 1998, their winning streak vs Brazil in Maracaná is already 3 matches.

*Argentina is the second team in history to avoid conceding goals from Brazil in 4 consecutive games (all with Lionel Scaloni as coach).
Only Mexico had been able to achieve it before (between 2001 and 2003).

*Brazil failed to score in a home qualifier for the first time in 14 years (since the 0-0 vs Venezuela in 2009).

*Argentina have now 3 consecutive games without conceding a goal away from home for the first time in the World Cup qualifiers (including also 3-0 win vs Bolivia and 2-0 vs Peru).

*Uruguay (3-0 vs Bolivia) have won 3 games in a row without conceding a single goal in the World Cup qualifiers for the first time since 1989-1993 (end of the road to the 1990 edition and beginning of the 1994). They have never yet won 4 such way in a row.

*Darwin Núñez has scored in 4 consecutive qualifiers, something that only two other Uruguayan footballers had done before: Rubén Sosa and Luis Suárez.
Núñez is in just 1 game from the absolute record in the South American qualifiers. He will try to beat this record next year.

*Bolivia extended their world record: 67 consecutive games without winning away from home in qualifiers (9 draws and 58 losses).

*Peru's start in the qualifying campaign (2 draws and 4 defeats in the first 6 games) are their 2nd worst after that of 1994 editions when they lost 5 games and tied 1 at this point of process (6 games).
Yoshimar Yotún has scored the goal breaking the negative series, and he was just the player that scored the last goal before it (vs Paraguay).

*Venezuela have equaled their best historical streak of consecutive games without losing in the qualifiers – 5 games, as many as between March and September 2009.
Now Venezuela enjoy a very rare moment being positioned higher in the standings than Brazil.

*Ángel Mena became in the game vs Chile (1-0) the Ecuador's oldest scorer in the history of qualifiers (35 years 304 days); he surpassed Carlos Raffo.
Also the Ecuador's record of the youngest scorer was beaten during this campaign earlier (by Kendry Páez).
