A historical win of Uruguay!
The Uruguay away victory over Argentina (2-0) became really historical. There are many reasons for this opinion. Here we list them, one after another.
*It was the Uruguay’s first ever victory as visitors against Argentina in the history of the qualifiers!
Before that, they have only won 2 such competitive matches, both in Copa America, 3-2 in 1937 and 1-0 in 1987.
*Uruguay have won an away game against Argentina by more than one goal difference for the first time in more than 100 years!
The last precedent is dated back by 25 July 1920 (3-1 win in a friendly in Buenos Aires).
*Argentina were last time defeated at home in any match (including friendlies) on 11 October 2016 (0-1 against Paraguay).
*Uruguay have beaten the current world champion for the 5th time in their history.
The previous such wins were achieved twice vs Brazil (3-0 in 1959 in Copa América, 1-0 in 1960 in a friendly) and twice vs Argentina (1-0 in Copa América 1987 and 2-0 in Copa América 1989).
*Uruguay are the second team ever in the whole history of football to win a competitive match away vs the current world champion by more than one goal difference. The first to achieve this was Sweden on 15 October 1983 (away win vs Italy 3-0 in a qualifying match for 1984 Euro).
*Uruguay have defeated Argentina and Brazil in consecutive matches for the 3rd time in their history. Previously they did it two editions of Copa América (1917 and 1959).
Apart from Uruguay, two wins over Argentina and Brazil in consecutive matches were also achieved by Bolivia (Copa América 1963, Copa América 1979), Italy (World Cup 1982) and Germany (World Cup 2014).
*Uruguay are the 4th team to defeat Argentina and Brazil in the same World Cup qualifying edition, after Ecuador (2006), Bolivia (2010) and Paraguay (2010).
*Within just a month, Uruguay has ended 2 of the 3 best unbeaten streaks in the history of the South American qualifiers, those of Brazil (37 games in a row, broken on 17 October 2023) and of Argentina (25 games in a row, broken now).
The remaining of three, Brazil’s series of 31 games in a row, were stopped by Bolivia on 25 July 1993.
*Uruguay has ended Argentina's amazing streak of 41 consecutive games without conceding the opening goal.
It happened last time on 12 November 2020 against Paraguay (Ángel Romero made it 0-1 in a match that ended 1-1). That match was also held in La Bombonera in Buenos Aires.

Uruguay didn’t let Argentina to set their new national record that would make 9 consecutive games without conceding a goal. With 8 such games, they only equaled their best historical streak.
*Araujo’s goal ended also a personal streak of Argentina's keeper Emiliano Martinez (751 minutes without conceding a goal).
*It took 24 games for Argentina to concede a goal in the first half. Prior to Araujo's goal with Uruguay, Ben Brereton did it with Chile in January 2022.
*Marcelo Bielsa who guides this Uruguay team is one of two Argentine coaches who defeated Argentina in the qualifiers (along with Gerardo Martino who did it with Paraguay in 2009).
Bielsa did it for the 2nd time in his career (also with Chile in 2008).
