OCEANIA'S CLUB OF THE FIRST DECADE (2001 - 2010) - AUCKLAND CITY FC (NEW ZEALAND)

Late in 2005 the Football Federation Australia (FFA) left the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) with FIFA’s approval and joined the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Since clubs must be affiliated with the respective Confederation, only those points are considered for the Oceanian club rankings of the first decade which Australian clubs earned during the period of 2001-2005. Therefore, depending on the period, Australian clubs may appear in either the Oceanian or the Asian continental club rankings. For the Club World Ranking of the 1st Decade, however, the Oceanian and Asian points earned by Australian clubs are added together.

After nine years, the Oceanian club ranking of the first decade still was topped by Perth Glory FC (Australia), leading Auckland City FC (New Zealand) by a whole three points. Ba FC (Fiji) came in third. As before, there were five Australian clubs amongst the top 10, once again showing the great superiority of the Australian league over the others in Oceania. New Zealand Knights FC (Auckland), which played in the Australian Top Division before it was dissolved, earned 90 points prior to Australia’s switch to Asia.

Since as of January 1, 2006, Australian clubs no longer earn any points in Oceania, their Oceanian rankings have dropped accordingly. Ba FC from Fiji has still overtaken the Perth Glory FC until end of the year 2010 by one point. But Auckland City FC gathered many points from, above all, its participation in the OFC Champions League (2009/10 & 2010/11) and remained clear ahead of Perth and Ba and was therefore crowned as Oceania’s Club of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century. The fourth-placed club is Waitakere United Achland of New Zealand, ahead of AS Pirae (Tahiti), Sydney Olympic FC (Australia) and Lautoka FC (Fiji). During the period 2001-2010, 36 clubs each achieved more than hundred points. The best-placed club of the Solomon Islands, Koloale FC Honiara, takes the 37th place.

Auckland City FC was honoured as Oceania’s Club of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century on occasion of the World Football Gala 2012 with a Certificate and a trophy in Barcelona (Picture).
