Red card, draw, 2 victories mark CHAN day 2.
Madagascar captain, Andriamirado Andriarimana got the spotlight for the wrong reason as he took the first red card of CHAN 2024 during their group B 0/0 draw with Mauritania. The insipid game ruled by Ugandan lady referee, Shamirah Nabadda pulled a scanty crowd at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Apart from the red card, the referee needed a VAR check to nullify a penalty after Mauritanian Mohamed Hawbott's hand had deflected the ball in the 30th minute.
Hosts, Kenya opened the day with their premier CHAN victory defeating twice winners DR Congo 1/0 before a tumultuous crowd at the Kasarani Stadium. It was Gor Mahia's proficient midfielder, Austine Odhiambo who found the net in the second minute of the first half stoppage time from just inside the rectangle. The Congolese side who had seen their 8th minute goal invalidated for an offside put up a great show appreciated by the hosts coached by South Africa great Benny McCarthy. Mvp Odhiambo did certainly deserve his reward at the end of an encounter equally attended by presidents Ruto and Odinga.
In the second group A game, Morocco defeated Angola at the Nyayo Stadium 2/0. It was formidable forward, Imad Riahi who broke the deadlock in the 29th minute slotting the ball under excellent keeper Neblu in a two-man duel on the edge of the box. Although possession was largely Angolan, they intriguingly gave their opponents a wider margin with an own-goal on 82 minutes to close a night that saw captain Mohamed Rabie Hrimat designated Mvp.
This Monday group C swings into action with the fixtures: Niger/ Guinea and Uganda/Algeria.
