THEY END THEIR CAREER WITH A RED CARD
Ending career with a red card
Pepe Reina experienced a nightmare end to his very long senior career as he got a red card in his final game before retirement.
The 42-year old Spanish goalkeeper, who decided to hang up his gloves after the 2024-25 season, was sent off in the last match-day of Italian Serie A when his Como was defeated by Inter (0-2).
On the stroke of half-time, Reina ran outside the penalty area, was beaten to the ball by Mehdi Taremi and clipped the heel of the Inter striker, receiving subsequently received a red card after a VAR check.
In this regard, we remember now the other players who have said good-bye to the top-level football such an unlovely way.
Naturally, the most outstanding forever in this category is Zinedine Zidane.
Another one who ended his career with a red card in the final of a prestigious competition was Jürgen Kohler, sent off in in the 31st minute of the 2002 UEFA Cup final, where his Borussia Dortmund was eventually beaten by Feyenoord in Rotterdam (2-3).
In the list of players with such a destiny, you can found other stars like Daniel Passarella and Ivan Zamorano.
Not included are those who got a red card sitting on bench (Gerard Pique) or finishing his career at a low-rank team (Edgar Davids).
