THE RECORD OF FABIAN RUIZ

Fabián Ruiz: longest starting unbeaten run with Spain

Having take part (as a sub) in the Nations League semi-final vs France (5-4) on 6 June, Fabián Ruiz retained his great undefeated streak in the Spanish national team which is now as long as 38 games (26 wins, 12 draws).
Since his debut with La Furia Roja in 2019, the PSG midfielder hasn’t still lost a single one being the player most caps among all worldwide who ever remained (or remain, for active ones) unbeaten in their national team career.
The game vs France let Fabián Ruiz establish another record, regarding the length of unbeaten streak with Spain since the start of career. The previous record belonged to Julen Guerrero who avoided defeats in his first 37 games with La Roja. His run lasted nearly 7 years, from January 1993 to October 1999.
The next such players in top 5 of the Spanish ranking are: Raúl Albiol (27 games – all wins!), Alfonso Pérez (23), Robin Le Normand (22 – still unbeaten like Ruiz).
Here we present the top 5 of global ranking for players unbeaten with their national team since the start of career. Three best Spanish players are there, but the world record owner is still Garrincha who didn’t lose in his first 49 games with Brazil, during nearly 11 years, from 1955 to 1966, and have lost then only in a World Cup 1966 game vs Hungary (1-3) which was his farewell game in Canarinha.
What is very amazing in the Garrincha story: while his individual run was lasting, Brazil lost as many as 24 times – but Mane has never appeared in a game that turned to be as a lost one. An incredible luck! (Or maybe an extreme influence…)
So, Fabián Ruiz has yet to work hard to beat Garrincha’s world record. But in terms of luck, he is neither deprived: within his personal run, Spain have lost 7 games (in which he was always off).
