HISTORICAL AND BITTER HAT TRICK

Mbappé’s bitter but historical hat-trick in Clasico

Kylian Mbappé’s hat-trick for Real Madrid in the league Clasico vs Barcelona on 11 May hardly brought him much joy, as his team suffered a painful defeat 3-4 and almost lost chances for the title. But nevertheless it became unique and historical in many aspects.

*Mbappé is the first ever player to score 2 away hat-tricks vs Barcelona (also in 2021 with PSG in Champions League).

*Mbappé has scored as many as 8 goals in his just 3 away games away vs Barça, along with:
3 with PSG in 2021 (at Camp Nou),
2 with PSG in 2024 (at Montjuïc).

*Mbappé is the first ever Real Madrid player with a hat-trick in his first La Liga away match vs Barça.
3 players in the club history scored a brace in such games:
Rafael Morera on 17 February 1929 (2-1 win),
Pedro Arsuaga on 30 March 1947 (2-3 loss),
Jude Bellingham on 28 October 2023 (2-1 win).

*Mbappé became the first player to lose a Clásico in which he had scored a hat-trick.
Four players in the history of Clasico did it in the drawn games; three of them in the same Copa del Rey game of 13 April 1916 that ended up 6-6 (Santiago Bernabéu and Luis Belaunde for Madrid, Paulino Alcántara for Barcelona).
Lionel Messi scored all 3 Barcelona goals in a La Liga thriller (3-3) of 11 March 2007.

*It was the 4th hat-trick of a Real Madrid player in a lost La Liga game (against any opposition); they are listed in the table below.
Another 2 such hat-tricks came in other competitions.
In XXI century, Mbappé is the 2nd Real Madrid player to score a hat-trick in a lost game of any competition, following Ronaldo (on 23 April 2003 vs Manchester United 3-4, Champions League).

*Mbappé is the 3rd Real Madrid player with a hat-trick in away game vs Barcelona, after:
Ferenc Puskás in 1963 (at Camp Nou, La Liga),
Karim Benzema in 2023 (Camp Nou, Copa del Rey).

*It was the 10th Real Madrid's hat-trick against Barcelona in La Liga.

*Mbappe is the third player to score a hat-trick in a La Liga’s Clasico in XXI century, after Lionel Messi (twice) and Luis Suárez, and the first to do so for Real Madrid since January 1995 (Iván Zamorano).

*Mbappé is already the 4th player to score a hat-trick against Barcelona this season, after:
Vangelis Pavlidis on 21 January (for Benfica, Champions League, league stage, Barcelona won 5-4),
Serhou Guirassy, on 15 April (for Borissia Dortmund, Champions League, quarter-final, Barcelona lost 1-3),
Borja Iglesias on 19 April (for Celta, La Liga, Barcelona won 4-3).
It is quite amazing story as Barça usually allow a hat-trick to a rival’s players pretty rare.
Moreover, these 4 hat-tricks came in the space of less than 4 months!

*Mbappe has scored 39 goals in 53 games for Real Madrid this season in all competitions, surpassing the best scoring record for a player in his first season for the club (Iván Zamorano: 37 goals in 45 games in the 1992-93 campaign).

*Mbappe, now with 27 goals in La Liga (in 31 games), equalled Alfredo Di Stefano as players who scored the most goals in their first league season with Real Madrid. Di Stefano did it in 1953-54 (in 28 games).
The next are Ivan Zamorano (1992-93) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2009-10); 26 league goals each at debut season in Real Madrid.

*The first 2 of 3 Mbappé's goals came to the 14th minute: it is the 2nd earliest brace by a Real Madrid player on Barcelona's pitch.
Only Ruud Van Nistelrooy did so earlier: 2 goals in the first 12 minutes of the Clásico played at Camp Nou in 2007.
