Franz Beckenbauer, widely regarded as one of the finest footballers of all time, has died aged 78. He was one of only three men, including France manager Didier Deschamps and Brazilian icon Mario Zagallo, who passed away last week, to win the World Cup as a player and manager.

The World Cup winner died on Sunday. Franz Beckenbauer’s health has gradually declined ever since his son Stephan died in 2015.

Beckenbauer is an icon of German football having won 104 caps for West Germany, captaining them to glory at the 1974 World Cup before repeating the feat, as manager, in Italy 16 years later in 1990. He also won many other honours, including a hat-trick of European Cups with Bayern Munich in the mid-70s, when he also established his reputation as THE LIBERO. Nicknamed “Der Kaiser”, Beckenbauer was as elegant as he was dominant, and such was his assurance in possession that he came to master the modern sweeper role, creating the libero. He was player, captain, coach and president of the FC Bayern München, his club for ever ! He is always considered as one of the World’s Best defenders in the History, winning two BALLON d’OR and named LEGEND PLAYER for FIFA and IFFHS.
