NEWS – WOMEN’S CONTINENTAL COMPETITIONS

 

UEFA

 

-       VFL Wolfsburg have been sensationally knocked out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League at the first hurdle for the first time in the Club History.

-       Last year’s runner up, winner of the Champions League 2013 and 2014, always qualified at least in quarter finals in each of their 11 participations, Wolfsburg was stunned by Paris FC, who is leader in the Division 1 with Olympique Lyon.

-       Paris FC eliminated Arsenal in the first qualifying round and now Wolfsburg in the second ! A fantastic result for the team where Julie Dufour (5 goals in the two rounds) and Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie (she stopped penalties against Arsenal and Wolfsburg) were brillliant !

-       Romy Leuchter qualified Ajax for the final round of the Champions League. She scored 7 goals in the qualification rounds and leads the Goalscorer ranking in Europe !

-       The other Paris team, Paris SG, already finalist of the Champions League in 2015 and 2017), assured their qualification against Manchester United with a brace of Lieke Martens and a new assist of Tabitha Chawinga after her goal in the first leg.

-       Eintracht Frankfurt, Slavia Prag, FC Rosengard, AS Roma, Brann, Hacken, St Polten, Real Madrid and Benfica qualified also for the final stage.

 

CONMEBOL

 

-       The Copa Libertadores final 2023 will opposite Palmeiras and Corinthians, the two best Brazilian teams, already winner of the competition in 2022 (Palmeiras) and in 2019 and 2021 (Corinthians).

-       Atlético Nacional Medellin became the 6th Colombian club to acceed to the semi finals. They lost the game against Palmeiras.

-       For their second participation at the Copa Libertadores, Palmeiras will play his second final after winning last year ! Only Santos (2009 and 2010) and Sao Jose (2013 and 2014) joind two consecutive years the final.

-       Bia Zaneratto (6 goals and 5 assists in the Copa Libertadores) leads the Palmeiras team ! She is brilliant this year with already 7 goals and 8 assists in the Brazilian Serie A !

-       Corinthians qualified for the final only with penalty kicks ! SC International ,with the competition’s best goal scorer Priscilla (7 goals), lead 1-0 a long time before the Victoria Albuquerque goal and penalties.

-       After 2019 and 2021, Corinthians have the opportunity to add a third Copa Libertadores Trophy. Final the 21 October.
